10 Important 2021 Data Center Trends and Technologies
The global COVID-19 pandemic led to huge changes in the Data Center industry. According to Dell Technologies CEO Michael Dell, technology “prevented a complete societal economic meltdown” by allowing the world to work, learn and play from home during the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic. CRN discusses some of the top Data Center trends for 2021.
Among the most important Data Center trends in 2021 is in spending. The global Data Center systems market is expected to reach $237 billion in spending, according to Gartner’s most recent IT spending forecast. In 2020, many enterprises focused on just keeping the lights on and running smooth operations. According to Gartner, the “temporary pause” button enterprises hit on Data Center spending will go away by the end of 2021. In fact, Data Center infrastructure spending is expected to grow year over year through 2024.
Other important trends and technologies include:
- The global pandemic accelerated the need to make Data Center operations less reliant on human intervention with the use of software automation and artificial intelligence.
- Data Center sustainability is now front and center! The industry is accelerating the adoption of sustainable practices like renewable energy, lithium-ion batteries and liquid cooling products to reduce climate change at a global level.
- The next Data Center frontier is at the Edge. The shift to the Edge is due to remote working and education, as well as technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT) and the emergence of 5G.
