Beverly Hills Police Department

Beverly Hills, CA

THE BENEFITS:

DSI successfully completed this project while working in live environments and never experiencing accidental shutdowns or interference with the police department or dispatch operations.

  • 2 – 60kVA N +1 UPS with MBP
  • 2 – New chilled water-cooling system for each UPS storage room
  • Existing ATS modifications
  • Existing switchgear modifications
  • New electrical distribution
  • UPS storage room construction modifications
  • E-ATS installations for all critical loads
  • Redundant power distribution for all critical loads

DSI works with the City of Beverly Hills to replace a UPS supporting its Police Dispatch network.

The Beverly Hills Police Department (BHPD) chose Data Specialties Inc. (DSI) as the “Lowest Responsible Bidder” for their UPS replacement project in their dispatch office. The project was engineered by P2S, and BHPD hired DSI to do the technical electrical infrastructure modifications and installations in this highly critical operating environment.

The Challenge:

The project required the replacement of an existing 60kVA UPS, and the installation of a second UPS for the Police Department Dispatch Office for added redundancy. The scope included switchgear and ATS modifications, the installation of two chilled water-cooling systems for the two UPS storage rooms, redundant power distribution for all critical loads, and the installation of forty-four (44) E-ATS electronic transfer units for the Police Department Dispatch Comm Room, Roof Level Radio Comm Room and at each Dispatch Room Workstation where 911 calls are handled for the city.

The Solution:

While facing material shortages and equipment delays due to worldwide material shortages dating back to the pandemic, DSI worked closely with the city to deliver and install one UPS replacement ahead of the project schedule. This installation was critical, as the existing UPS was experiencing failure and had become unreliable during the equipment procurement timeframe leading up to the project start date.

Due to the existing electrical systems configuration, this project required three shutdowns. Each shutdown provided a short 2-hour window to both reconfigure the electrical infrastructure to accommodate the new UPSs and to address various electrical distribution additions that would ensure this project’s success. In addition, the BHPD set up and broke down mobile dispatch command centers for each shutdown, while DSI hit the mark each time. This allowed for seamless police dispatch activities to continue during these necessary upgrades.

DSI worked closely with various staff members within BHPD and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works to keep this project continually moving forward while working through difficult equipment delivery delays.

Once all the equipment was received, installed, tested, and turned over, DSI assisted with several smaller projects that enhanced these upgrades and the overall reliability of these newly installed systems.
