5G and the Edge: What It Means for Data Centers

5G is here and growing fast!  Leviton Network Solutions, in a well-attended webinar last week, made recommendations for “preparing your Data Center infrastructure for the coming waves of 5G adoption.” Leviton expects 1 billion 5G subscriptions by the end of 2023. With its faster speeds, higher capacity, and lower latency, this kind of coverage will change the experience of businesses and individuals with access to these Edge services. It will power services like the Internet of Things, public safety, autonomous automobiles, and civic infrastructure. As this increases demand for real-time access, how will 5G impact Edge Data Centers? To view the On-Demand version of the Leviton webinar:  Leviton Webinar on 5G and Data Centers

Gartner sees this market only growing, with investments in 5G network infrastructure almost doubling in 2020, despite slowing in the market overall due to the pandemic. As 5G adoption grows, Edge Data Centers need to be ready to adapt to ensure they can successfully incorporate 5G services. To do so, Edge facilities will need to be agile, scalable, and efficient.

The Edge is about speed and real-time access—data must move faster in the cloud and on the Edge. So Edge Data Centers need the right infrastructure to serve the needs of their business and clients. That means building Edge Data Centers, whether a micro Data Center or cloudlet, with the right equipment—including switches, transceivers, connectors, and ethernet options—to handle the increased speeds and density of traffic on 5G networks.

For Data Centers looking to build out their 5G capabilities, DSI can help. We can assess your current Edge facilities and help you understand the gaps in your current infrastructure. Then we can provide you with recommendations on how to ensure your Edge facilities are agile enough to handle 5G. As wireless infrastructure continues to evolve, we can help you make sure your Edge Data Center can meet the needs of your company’s and your customers’ needs.
