THE RESULTS: A New On-Campus Modular Data Center Provides Redundancy, Reliability and Plenty of Room for Updated IT Technology

Data Specialties Inc. designed, engineered and built a Prefabricated Modular Data Center at DSI’s Buena Park facility. For the installation, DSI worked with the Campus Facilities Department, as well as the on-site Campus State Fire Marshall, to bring the project to completion. The University now has its updated critical IT Infrastructure in its modular building in a seismically safe location on the campus.

Modular Data Center

Data Specialties Inc. built and installed a Prefabricated Modular Data Center to solve several issues with an existing Data Center for one of the best, nationally ranked, public universities in the West.

THE CHALLENGE:

A large public university’s existing Data Center was housed in a building that was a seismic risk and was slated to be demolished.  The existing Data Center infrastructure was old and difficult to maintain.  In addition, the existing Data Center was larger than what was needed due to newer IT Technology such as virtualization and storage.

THE SOLUTION:

Working with a local engineering firm, the University decided to go with a Modular Data Center solution.  The University chose a piece of land on the campus to locate the new Modular Data Center. The location was ideal because it was otherwise unusable for new campus buildings.  Through a competitive public bid process, and because of DSI’s local presence and expertise with the Modular Data Center, DSI was awarded the PMDC project.

The installed module, 45’L x 20’W x 11’H, included:

  • (2) 100kW UPS systems paralleled N+1 scalable to 250kW N+1
  • 225kVA Power Distribution Unit
  • (26) Server Cabinets
  • (7) 10-Ton Exterior Wall Mount DX air conditioning systems with air side economizers
  • Hot Aisle Containment System
  • Novec-1230 Fire Suppression System
  • Data Center Monitoring System
