Southern California AFCOM Meeting Ends The Year on A High Note
Last week, AFCOM’s Southern California Chapter hosted its 8th Annual Holiday Social & Quarterly Educational Series at Crevier Classic Cars in Costa Mesa. In addition to looking at a vast vintage and exotic automobile collection, attendees were treated to the Swing Kittens who performed everyone’s favorite holiday music.
The most important part of the evening was the educational panel consisting of a number of Data Center experts including Jeff Filliez, Head of Data Center Operations at San Diego Supercomputer Center; Ken Venner, Software Executive at PEAK6 Investments and the former CIO at SpaceX and Broadcom; and David Alexander, CISO and Chief Cyber Risk Officer for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. The panel was moderated Brad Schultheis, Regional Director, LDP Associates, Inc.
The panel discussed some of the trends we will see in 2020, as well as cloud vs on-premises Data Centers and what is driving enterprises’ decisions. Security continues to be a big issue with moving to the cloud. To help meet the needs of ever-increasing compute power, the panel discussed more adoption of liquid cooling to meet the needs of the compute demand.
Upon conclusion of the speaking portion, attendees got a tour of the garage and an in-depth description of the vehicles exhibited. It was noted that the facility serves as storage for a number of private collectors and there were even a few vehicles for sale. For those looking for a little more fun, the facility set up a slot car race track where winners got to increase their chances of winning a prize during giveaways at the conclusion of the event.
Once again, AFCOM’s Southern California chapter has outdone itself with the program and venue. We’re looking forward to next year’s venue.
